Cogeneration, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) & Emergency Generation
We have been involved with cogeneration simple and combined cycle designs for over forty years. Most large refinery and pharmaceutical clients had large in-house cogeneration for both economics and resiliency long before it became fashionable. From 100kW through 50MW we have developed projects from energy analysis, construction estimates to fully commissioned plants. Every financial and Fortune 100 company client has onsite redundant emergency generators for both life safety and business continuance. Since Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, Triad has installed hundreds of generators and substations, in some instances raised 20 feet, to insure power to critical systems.
The CHP push including microgrids has been substantial. Triad is a member of the NJ Combined Heat & Power Coalition. Our cadre of leaders in the Industry has been giving guidance to legislators in NJ on the path for resiliency in hospitals, government facilities and critical businesses.
Triad has performed microgrid analyses and design for sites in NJ, CO and CT. Triad was the leader in the CT governor’s challenge for resilient microgrid design in the state. Our firm, long before “microgrid” was a buzzword, had developed stand-alone offshore power systems for areas of Haiti, resorts in the Caribbean and petrochemical facilities in Saudi Arabia.
Roanoke, Virginia Generator Relocation
Triad performed all engineering to successfully relocate and integrate a 1MW diesel generator into an existing distribution system to provide 2N redundancy.
A generator selector transfer switch was designed to alternate the preferred emergency source for maintenance and provide additional overcurrent protection for system coordination.

Triad CEI provided the MEP and civil engineering to install a full building emergency generator with advanced relaying for future demand reduction or peak energy shaving:
Paralleling switchboard with draw-out circuit breakers to provide closed transition transfers in less than 100ms,
Storm avoidance capabilities to transfer in anticipation of a utility power outage,
Integration of load shedding with Siemens BAS system,
Upgrade of existing natural gas header and pressure reducing valves to maintain pressure to building,
Zoning, construction and NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) permitting support.
